In the English language, Dia del trabajo is the Labor Day. In Mexico, this is the day when the Mexican workers’ union movements are commemorated. Historically, it was a day to recognize and respect the rights of workers. There are also dance productions where the proceeds go to restoration of the art and rescue of architecture of Mexico City’s historic downtown area referring mostly to Zocalo. There are notable north, south, east and west sites of the Zocalo other than the surroundings. The different styles of architecture in this area are Baroque, Neocalssical, Italiante style, Art Nouveau, Beaux-Arts, Art Deco and last but not least the Functionalist style.

For more cultural events, you can find plays, exhibits, concerts and also film screenings all til the 13th May at the Actividades de Mayo. This year, its main theme is eradication of violence against women. Ninety activities will be held in Oaxaca including literature, lectures, visual arts, health fairs and street art.
