One of the main problems of the average traveler is how to find the cheapest possible way to fly to their destination and Mexico is one of the long time favorite vacation spots of US travelers. Putting these two facts together, quite a lot of people must have already had the question how to find cheap flights to Mexico?

Below I will try to give you a few tips on how to find these desired cheap flights, hope you will find them useful. And please do not be shy to share your own wisdom and tips with other travelers in need below, in the comment section.

Searching for cheap flights

The classic tips can always be applied: always search at least 21 days before your departure, unless you are waiting for some kick-ass last minute deal. Also try to avoid weekend flights, travel between Monday and Thursday (Tuesday is best) and stay over for at least one weekend and enjoy a beautiful Mexican beach.

Also search tirelessly, monitor the larger travel websites such as Expedia or Orbitz, but it is good to also keep smaller sites like Flighthub (www.flighthub.com) or Travelgrove in mind.

Choose your airport well

It is usually best to fly to a larger airport with more schedule options and airlines from whose prices you can choose. The largest airports in Mexico are Mexico City Intl Airport, Cancun Intl Airport and Guadalajara Intl. Airport.

Benito Juarez Intl Airport (MEX) in Mexico City is the largest hub in the country with the widest schedule and the most airlines. If it is not your final destination, it can still prove to be cheaper if you fly here first and then take a domestic flight to your vacation spot.

Fly with a low cost airline

There are many low cost airlines you can choose from and maybe sometimes you can hear complaints about the quality of their service, savings still speak for themselves.. Both Air Tran and Spirit Airlines operate flights between the US and Mexico City, Cancun and Los Cabos.

Volaris, Interjet and VivaAerobus are Mexican low cost airlines, but you can take advantage of them as well, if you, for instance fly to your destination from a Mexican city close to the border. You get to Tijuana by bus for instance and take a flight to Mexico City from there…

Travel during off season

High travel season in Mexico begins around mid-December (in some places in November) and ends with Easter Week. It is very crowded everything gets more expensive as well; you should keep away especially during Spring Break.

Obviously, off season is between Easter and mid-December. During this time there are less people and things can be 20-50% cheaper, so I would recommend this time for travel. Still, if you are not the adventurous type, you might not plan your holiday for the time of the Hurricane Season. 😉
