The first settlement was called Valle de Santa Lucía and was founded in 1577 by the Portuguese priest Alberto del Canto. The second was called San Luis Rey de Francia and was founded in 1582 by an other Portuguese Luis Carvajal y de la Cueva, the first colonizer of the New Kingdom of Léon.
