Guaymas is the most important port in the Sonora State of Mexico. In the year 1701 the missionaries Eusebio Kino Francisco and Juan María de Salvatierra founded the Mission of San Jose, at a few miles from where the city lies today.

If you plan to visit the city of Guaymas you might do that by plane. The General José María Yáñez International Airport is an international airport located in Guaymas, Sonora, Mexico. The airport provides national and international air traffic for the city of Guaymas.

 

It was named after General José María Yáñez Guaymas who defended the city of Guaymas against an army of 400 French, German and Chilean filibusters in the nineteenth century. This airport is operated by the Aeropuertos y Servicios Auxiliare, which is a state company.

The beaches of the city of Guaymas

In the city of Guaymas you can enjoy a walk on the beautiful beaches. The San Carlos beaches (Pilar and Algodones) are very nice. During the first months of the year in the Sea of ​​Cortez the whales come to mate, this is a very unique image, that you shoudn’t miss if you are around in this period of the year. The clear and quiet water of th bay along with the mountains offer a relaxing experience. Near Guaymas is such a wide variety of fish, that you will not want to leave the beautiful underwater world.

Architectural attractions in Guaymas

The city offers tourists the opportunity to visit several cultural buildings. Visit the Church of San Fernando, which was built in the nineteenth century and the Sacred Heart Church. Guyamas offers a very interesting historical part as well. The architecture of the buildings such as the Church of San Fernando, the Municipal Palace and the Banco de Mexico will surely surprise you.

Festivals and carnivals in the city of Guaymas

The city of Guaymas has some famous festivals. The Guaymas Carnival is a tradition celebrated every February and is one of the most important festivals of the city. We also have to mention the Calaca Festival, which is held in the first day of November.
