The city of La Paz is the capital of Baja California Sur Estado and an important regional commercial center. It lies at about 12 meters above sea level and has a hot dry climate.

A Jesuit mission was established on the city’s site in 1720, it was abandoned 30 years later due to the harsh climate, Indian uprisings, and the loss of much of the population from diseases. The pearls and the mining continued to attract the interest of Spanish, and a permanent settlement was founded here in 1811. La Paz became the capital of the territory in 1829. La Paz was a popular tourist destination since the 1970s.


Then an international airport was completed and the Transpeninsular Highway was paved. The attractions of La Paz besides of the beautiful sunny beaches include sport fishing, water sports and excursions to nearby islands for diving and observing the wildlife.

Visiting the city of La Paz

La Paz is also a commercial fishing port, a regional transportation center and a market for agricultural products from the surrounding countryside. La Paz can be reached through the air and land trasportation network as well as with ferry and car.

The Manuel Marquez de Leon Airport is located at about 9 km in the southwest of La Paz. The International Airport handles the national and international air traffic of the city. From the airport you can take the buses that are transferring you to the city, you can take a taxi or rent a car.

The Manuel Márquez de León International Airport has flights to major cities in Mexico: Mexico City, Guadalajara, Monterrey, and the United States of America, with flights to Los Angeles. Airlines flying to La Paz include the Alaska Airlines, the Aeromexico Connect, the Volaris and the VivaAerobus.

The climate of the city of La Paz

The climate of La Paz is typically dry, warm and sunny, the average temperatures are between 23 and 25 °C. In the summer months (July- September) the average temperatures are usually between 34 and 36 °C and can be wet. Winter months (December to February) are the coldest, with temperatures decreasing below 15 °C at night, and the maximum temperatures are between 20 and 25 °C.

The gulf acts as a barrier against seasonal storms in the Sea of ​​Cortez. The rainfall is minimal, although the irregular rains can be abundant. The city of La Paz has over 300 days of sunshine per year.
